CLEVELAND– Officials from Quicken Loans Arena discussed the construction at the Q during an event on Wednesday.

The Cavs said the renovation project will occur in mid-February with barriers to define the construction zones going up on February 5. The initial phase will focus on the outside of the building and will impact the way fans enter and exit the Q for events, as well as vehicles traveling on Huron Rd. in the Gateway District.

Work will start on the north side of the arena along Huron Rd, and the south side of the arena facing Progressive Field.

The Cavs said the north expansion will span from the corner of Ontario St. and Huron Rd. to the corner of Huron Rd. and E. 6th St. The expansion of the north side of the arena will add a 42,530-square foot atrium space along Huron Rd. that will be enclosed by a glass facade. The south expansion will add 6,350-square feet to the arena’s main concourse.

Due to renovations at the Q, traffic patterns around both Quicken Loans Arena and Progressive Field will change.

Cleveland police and the City of Cleveland provided the following details*:

  • The traffic pattern changes will begin on February 5, 2018 and last until approximately mid-2019.
  • Barriers will be set up on Huron Road from Ontario Street to East 6th Street along the

westbound lanes. North of the barriers will have two lanes open for vehicular travel. South of the barriers will be closed for storage and utilization of construction equipment. Street parking will be restricted as needed. Pedestrians will be able to utilize new re-defined crosswalks.

  • Flow Pattern, Weekday Non-game Days: Traffic will be maintained on Huron Road with one lane eastbound and one lane westbound through the construction zone. Morning and evening rush hour will be staffed with officers and/or traffic controllers to ensure traffic flow is optimized and maintained.
  • Flow Pattern, Before Games/Events: The following restrictions will apply beginning two

hours prior to games or events at Quicken Loans Arena or Progressive Field:

 Huron Road will be restricted to two lanes eastbound from Ontario Street to the

    GatewayEast Garage entrance.

 Huron Road will be closed to westbound traffic at Prospect Avenue.

 East 4th Street southbound will be left turn only onto Huron Road, no changes to

    East 4th Street northbound.

 Rush hour operations will supersede Game/Event Day restrictions.

  • Flow Pattern, End of Game/Event: Traffic flow for the end of games/events at Quicken

Loans Arena or Progressive Field shall be restricted as follows:

 Huron Road will be closed to eastbound traffic from Ontario Street to the Gateway

    East garage

  • Vehicles departing the Gateway East Garage at the Huron Road exit will only be

permitted to exit left (westbound) onto Huron Road.

 East Fourth Street will be right turn only at Huron Road

Plans were announced to renovate the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers in December 2016. The Cavs agreed to pay for half of the $140 million project, with the city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County covering the other portion.

Construction was delayed when community groups pushed for a ballot issue. At one point, the team withdrew its support, saying the referendum attempts made the project unfeasible.
