CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) – Gov. John Kasich took action on a bill that would essentially make revenge porn illegal in Ohio.

House Bill 497 prohibits the nonconsensual dissemination of private sexual images, sets penalties for those who distribute the images, and creates certain legal rights for the victims of the offense.

The legislation was introduced in Feb. 2018 by Democratic Reps. John Rogers and Nathan Manning.

Under the new law, first-time offenders will be charged with a third-degree misdemeanor. The second offense is a second-degree misdemeanor. A third offense will warrant a first-degree misdemeanor charge.

The bill will go into effect in approximately 90 days after passage by Gov. Kasich.
