Did officials go way too far or what!?

Andrew Johnson, a New Jersey High School wrestler covered his dreadlocks right before it was his turn to walk out onto the mat for his wrestling match. The referee, Alan Maloney, came over to him and told him that the covering for his dreads wasn’t enough, either cut the dreads or forfeit the match.

Andrew Johnson upset about either cutting his hair or forfeiting, Johnson, right there on the side of the mat, cut his dreads off and went on to slaughter his opponent, winning the match.

Allegedly this particular referee is known for his racism. My questions are, don’t you think if his hair was an issue that is something that should have been handled way before the match? More importantly if this guy is known for racism why is he being allowed to work around children, and why didn’t any school official come to this young mans aid? Was that really the time or place for that? Parents would you have let your child make this decision?
