After months of teasers, Disney has finally released the first official trailer for the Aladdin live-action remake. The TV spot, which aired Sunday night during the 2019 Grammys, introduced audiences to Will Smith’s blue Genie.
“You really don’t know who I am?” Smith says in the preview. “Genie, wishes, lamp—none of that ringing a bell?”
The remake will arrive about 27 years after the original animated version debuted. Smith discussed his role in a December interview with Entertainment Weekly, explaining how his Genie will differ from Robin Williams’ 1992 version.
“There’s a little bit less mimicking—there’s a James Brown piece that we do but a little bit less mimicking,” he said. “The thing that will be the major addition from me playing the Genie is the hip-hop base. I think that’ll be fun for people. I think it’ll stand out as unique even in the Disney world. There hasn’t been a lot of that hip-hop flavor in Disney history!”
You can watch the Aladdin trailer below. The Guy Ritchie-directed remake will hit U.S. theaters May 24.
