The city council president is expected to be sworn in as the new mayor sometime today.

Highland Heights Mayor Scott E. Coleman has resigned following accusations he stole money from a U.S. Rep’s campaign.

WKYC has confirmed Coleman stepped down Tuesday morning. City Council President Chuck Brunello Jr. is expected to be sworn in as the new mayor sometime today.

Cleveland.com reported last week that Republican Rep. Dave Joyce’s campaign asked the Federal Election Commission to review possible embezzlement by Coleman, who had previously served as the campaign’s treasurer. The letter suspected Coleman of stealing more than $80,000 from the campaign’s bank account over a three-year period beginning in 2015.

The Geauga County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed there is an ongoing investigation into the matter, but would not provide further details.
