In 1998, Cleveland’s own, Laura Cowan and her kids were held captive inside a garage with no running water, heat or a bathroom in California after being manipulated into marrying a child abuser and polygamist named Mansa Musa Muhummed.  Laura Cowan through the help of a mailman made it out, and when she did she promised to help others in similar situations.  Now her story is going to be told in a Lifetime original movie titled ‘Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story’.

“When I was locked up in that garage, I said, ‘Lord if my children and I survive this I dedicate my life helping others, so they don’t go through what we went through,’”

‘Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story’ is part of Lifetimes critically acclaimed Ripped From The Headline series, starring actress Paige Hurd, who will be playing the role of Laura Cowan, is best known for recent role in Power Book II: Ghost, as Tariq St. Patrick’s girlfriend.

Paige Hurd went through deep emotional depths for her gripping portrayal of Laura Cowan:

I just pulled from Laura. I feel when you’re playing someone like Laura, who went through something, there is not much I could ever put together that would equal the amount of torture and pain she endured. It was important for me to have conversations with her to see what exactly went through. It was also about going to work and my hotel and not doing too much and not being too active because I still wanted to feel the sense of being locked in somewhere and not having an out per say.

Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story premieres Sat., Jan. 18 at 8/7c on Lifetime. It will be available to stream the next day in the Lifetime app.
