30 Years Of Bad Boys: A Franchise That Changed The Game

It’s been 30 years since Bad Boys burst onto the scene in 1995, introducing the world to Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. Celebrate the franchise that became a cultural staple with fun facts and a gallery of some of its best moments inside. Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, portrayed by Will Smith and Martin Lawerence, are the characters who would go on to become cultural icons in the Bad Boys franchise. Will Smith took to Instagram to celebrate the anniversary (April 7), sharing a nostalgic throwback photo from the original film alongside a heartfelt caption. “30 years ago @jerrybruckheimer, Don Simpson and @michaelbay took a chance on us and Bad Boys was born!! Grateful for all the love y’all have shown us thru the years ,” Smith shared on Instagram.

Directed by Michael Bay in his feature debut, Bad Boys redefined the buddy-cop genre with explosive action, stylish direction, and the unbeatable chemistry between Smith and Martin Lawrence. But the road to box office success was far from predictable. The movie was made on a modest $19 million budget and featured a script that was still evolving during production. In fact, much of the banter between Smith and Lawrence was improvised. This added to the authentic, off-the-cuff energy that made their dynamic so unforgettable. The franchise spawned three sequels, Bad Boys II (2003), Bad Boys for Life (2020), and the latest film, Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024). Each movie ramped up the action while staying true to the heart of the series: loyalty, brotherhood, and lots of explosions. Among the franchise’s standout moments are the unforgettable Reggie interrogation scene from Bad Boys II, Lawrence’s hilarious fear of heights, and Smith’s iconic slow-motion shot emerging from the car—shirt unbuttoned, Miami sun blazing. Behind the scenes, it’s said that Smith and Lawrence would often push each other to take scenes over the top, making their performances even more memorable. Three decades later, Bad Boys remains a beloved film series for fans of all generations.
