Black Music Month originated in 1979. President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the month of June as Black Music Month to celebrate the wonderful music, achievements, births, important timelines, events and to remember those we lost.
1. Valaida Snow

1904: Jazz trumpeter, singer and dancer Valaida Snow was born. She was a pioneering female in jazz and among the first to reach an international audience. She passed away in 1956. (Photo: Tumblr)

1983:Happy Birthday to Soul/R&B singer & songwriter Leela James who turns 31 today.
