TMZ is reporting that “American Idol” judge Mariah Carey hung up the phone when she was informed that Nicki Minaj is also being considered for the panel.

Sources connected with “Idol” say Mariah was led to believe she would be the only woman at the judges’ table, according to the website.

While Us Weekly reported yesterday it has two sources who confirm Minaj as a judge, FOX has yet to make an announcement, and TMZ today claims her situation “is by no means a done deal.”

“Firstly, it’s unclear whether Randy Jackson will return as a judge or a mentor, and secondly, some head honchos on the show believe it’s a mistake to have two women and a man on the panel,” the website reports. “Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and Enrique Iglesias are leading the hunt for another of the vacant judging spots, though should Randy return, a line-up of him, Mariah and Nicki may not appeal to middle America.”

TMZ continued: “It’s not difficult to figure out that Minaj is a lot younger than Carey, and perhaps more relevant in terms of the audience that ‘Idol’ is attempting to reach (especially considering their newest rivals ‘The Voice,’ and ‘The X Factor’ have young, hip, judges).

“It’s unclear whether Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj have anything against each other – unlikely given they’ve worked together before – though it’s understood that the former simply assumed she would be the main attraction on the forthcoming season of ‘American Idol,’ which now doesn’t appear to be the case.”
