Tyler Perry opened up regarding some very personal issues yesterday on Oprah.

Tyler Perry on the Oprah show yesterday revealed that he had been horribly abused as a child by his father, as well as being sexually molested by other people while growing up. His family as he grew up was horrifying and I think it’s a miracle that he came out of that without losing his faith in God. In the video below, you can see parts of his interview with Oprah, and it’s almost as difficult to watch as it must have been for him to discuss.

Perry’s mother died not too long ago, and now that she is gone he is revealing things about his childhood that he never discussed before. I find it interesting that he protected her in this way, when clearly she failed to protect him as a child. Perry also talked about forgiveness in his Oprah interview, and how the strength you need to survive abuse is the same strength you use to forgive it.

That he could have endured so much as a child, then grown up to become a premiere filmmaker with a clear and unrelenting message of love for God in all his works just makes it even harder to bear. We don’t want someone like him to have suffered, yet it must be that his suffering then is what makes him so great now.
