CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –
A deadly end to a SWAT situation on Cleveland’s west side Monday night.
Police were called to West 168th Street shortly after 8PM for a man shot. Once on scene, officers found 34-year-old James Labaugh with a gunshot wound to the head.
EMS responded to the scene and Labaugh was rushed MetroHealth Medical Center, where he is being treated for his injuries.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Labaugh and the suspect – 28-year-old Michael Tengler – were involved in a verbal altercation over property. The altercation became physical and during the physical altercation, Tengler produced a handgun and shot Labaugh in the head. After shooting Labaugh, Tengler entered his vehicle and ran him over as he left the scene.
Police tell 19 Action News Tengler then went to his home on West 189th Street and barricaded himself inside. The Cleveland Division of Police SWAT team was notified and responded.
Approximately one hour later, Tengler exited his home with a handgun to his head and discharged the weapon. He was conveyed to Fairview Hospital, where he expired from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Upon searching the suspect’s residence, suspected explosive devices were located. Officers immediately exited the residence, notified the Cleveland Division of Police Bomb Squad and evacuated surrounding residences. The Bomb Squad responded to the scene and removed suspected explosive devices, black powder and weapons.
This investigation is being handled by the Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit.
The official causes of death will be determined by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
