AVON LAKE, Ohio – Authorities in Avon Lake said a physical fight landed a mother and her baby in the hospital, and ended with the child’s father being charged.
Dispatchers got a frantic call around 9 p.m. Monday about a baby injured and bleeding from his head.
When officers arrived to the Vinewood address, they determined the baby’s father, Victor Cabrera-Zamora, 23, came to the house to visit with his son and get a document from the child’s mother.
Police said Cabrera-Zamora threatened to take the baby away, at which point he allegedly hit the 2-month-old’s mother and a physical fight began. During the altercation, Cabrera-Zamora reportedly tried to leave the house with his son in his arms and fell down some stairs. The baby’s head hit a piano, splitting it open.
The mother and child were taken to Fairview Hospital for treatment. The baby was later transferred to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
Cabrera-Zamora has been charged with abduction, felonious assault, two counts of domestic violence and improperly handling of firearms in a vehicle. Authorities found a loaded AK-47 assault rifle inside his car when taking him into custody.
Police said Cabrera-Zamora is also suspected of illegally being in the U.S. The investigation into his citizenship is ongoing.
