CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

19 Action News has been following the Chardon tragedy since it broke Monday morning.

The story has been making national headlines and we’ve found some local officers who had already been training for a situation like this. They have been learning new ways to handle what police call an active shooter.

All Cleveland cops recently received an eight page order explaining what to do if a gunman is rampaging through a school or mall or even a sporting event. Cleveland police are relying more than ever on patrol officers — counting on them to confront a gunman instead of waiting for a SWAT team.

In the past several years Cleveland cops have had to deal with Biswanath Halder — he killed one man and wounded two people at Case Western Reserve University. Then there was young Asa Coon who shot and wounded four people before killing himself at the city’s SuccessTech school. Cleveland cops have trained for this before but now they’re ramping it up with clear guidelines of which officers do what and when.

“We want the fastest response time out there and the fastest response is always gonna be with your basic patrol officers in those marked zone cars out in the neighborhoods,” said George Kwan. “We want them to all be on the same page and collectively go after these active shooters and prevent the loss of life.”

A big part of the new training deals with talking to each other and forming teams to go after a gunman.
