LORAIN, OH (WOIO) –

Are we taking care of our eyesight as we age?  Unfortunately, in a lot of cases the answer is no, according to Dr. David Miller.

“Seniors in particular, on fixed incomes, may not seek out medical care, especially preventative care, like regular eye exams,” Dr. Miller said.

And if the cost is a problem, there is a cure. Dr. Miller, of Retina Associates of Cleveland, is part of a national program called Eye Care America that provides a free eye exam, and treatment, for senior citizens, over the age of 65, who have not seen an eye doctor over the past three years.

Dr. Miller is among a growing number of doctors concerned that senior citizens are not going to the eye doctor because they don’t have the money to make their co-payments or have not meet their deductibles and can’t afford the out of pocket expense.

“You’d hate to see anyone lose their vision because of economics. A lot of the treatments are not that expensive and if someone is holding off on a treatment because they can’t make a twenty or forty dollar co-pay, it just doesn’t make any sense.”

The program is made possible by 298 volunteer ophthalmologists in the state of Ohio and it is easy to sign up by logging onto www.eyecareamerica.org.
