CANTON, Ohio – Students at one Canton school have taken up a collection, making art for Sandy Hook Elementary School kids.

The St. Michael Catholic School community has proven that once again the people of northeast Ohio have big hearts.

At Tuesday morning’s Christmas program, donations were taken for the victims and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Over $600 was collected.

Another project that will involve every student in the school was designed by art teacher Cathy Bravis. A poster with the fingerprint of each student will make up a bouquet of flowers. The flowers will be in a vase with the signatures of the students.

Principal Claire Gatti said one of their parents is from Newtown and will take the gifts to Sandy Hook over Christmas break, when she travels there to visit her parents.

Gabrielle Olivieri, an 8th grade student at St. Michael, said in religion class their teacher allowed them to talk about the tragic event and write prayer petitions. They also had a prayer service and lit a candle for the families and victims.

“She let us talk about it and it made us feel more comfortable,” explained Oliveria.
