*This weekend, Don Cheadle hits theaters for a second run as Iron Man’s closest ally Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes in “Iron Man 3.”

But this time, he’s sporting a new ensemble.

The character, played in the original film by Terrence Howard, saw Rhodey take to his specially-crafted War Machine armor in “Iron Man 2.” In Part 3, the War Machine was rebranded into the Iron Patriot suit – with even more bells and whistles for the character, but more headaches for the actor.

“The Iron Patriot is about three kilos heavier, so I prefer War Machine,” Cheadle said during a press conference for the movie. “Something that Robert [Downey Jr.] and I talked about after the second one, he came to me and he said, ‘Now let’s try and really kick this relationship off and really try to see who these guys are.’ A lot of fun for me in this one was being able to do a lot of the action outside of the suit, and getting to work with the stunt team and doing a lot of the cable work. That was just a big thrill for me. It was like I was a big kid getting to play with the best toys.”

Below, Cheadle talks about how the relationship between Stark and Rhodey evolves in “Iron Man 3.”

“Iron Man 3″ opens in the U.S. on Friday, May 3. Watch its UK trailer below.
