CLEVELAND – After a day full photos and descriptions of life for three women held captive for a decade, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty proudly stated: “The nightmare on Seymour Avenue is over.”

Ariel Castro, who pleaded guilty to 937 counts including rape and kidnapping, was sentenced on Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus a thousand years.

McGinty said there are not enough adjectives to describe what Castro did to Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. He also referred to the Ohio Department of Corrections as Castro’s new landlord.

“We will always be inspired,” McGinty said of the three victims. “They are our heroes. They are survivors”

McGinty thanked the Cleveland police officers, Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s deputies and FBI agents who worded of this case for more than 10 years. He said the 92 pounds of chains stretching 99 feet long were like nothing they had ever seen.

During Castro’s statement to the court, he rambled as he spoke about his daughter, his sexual relationships with the women and how the FBI failed his victims.

“Nothing is going to surprise the prosecution when it comes to a defense statement,” assistant prosecutor Ann Faraglia said. She added she was only surprised at the lenth Castro spoke, joking he would have kept everyone in court all day if he could.

McGinty said the reason for the evidence photos and statements was so that there would be something to maintain the conviction. He said he didn’t want Castro’s “silly statement” to be the only thing on the record down the road that would allow an appeal.

“It would be irresponsible, it would be outright negligent to not present evidence at the hearing,” McGinty said.
