Billboard reports that Robin Thicke and his team approached the family of Marvin Gaye, offering a settlement of six-figures in order to keep from going to court over the “similarities” between Thicke’s mega-hit, ‘Blurred Lines’ and Gaye’s classic, ‘Got To Give It Up’, but the family rejected his offer.

Thicke acknowledged in an interview with GQ magazine that ‘Blurred Lines’ was indeed inspired by Gaye’s record, saying he and Pharrell wrote and recorded the bulk of the song in “a couple hours”.

Thicke’s lawsuit states the “intent in producing ‘Blurred Lines’ was to evoke an era. In reality, the Gaye defendants are claiming ownership of an entire genre…. The reality is that the songs themselves are starkly different.”
