The lockdown for U.S. Senate buildings have been lifted after multiple gunshots were fired. It’s not yet confirmed if the Capitol building itself and the House office buildings are still under lockdown.

“There are reports of injuries,” the Senate Sergeant of Arms, Terrance Gainer, told the Associated Press.

The Associated Press reports that the injury is to a police officer.

CNN reports a car chase began near the White House when a car tried to get past barriers at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The White House is a block away at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Capitol Police began chasing the black vehicle aftter “10 to 15 shots” were fired in “rapid succession,” according to MSNBC.

Police scrambled in front of the west side of the building near the Senate Hart Building. CNN reporter Athena Jones reported hearing several shots.

Both the Senate and House of Representatives has gone into recess as a result.

U.S. Capitol Building on Lockdown Following Multiple Gunfire

WASHINGTON, DC (RNN) – The U.S. Capitol building is on lockdown after reports of multiple gunshots fired.

The Associated Press reports that the injury is to a police officer.

“There are reports of injuries,” the Senate Sergeant of Arms, Terrance Gainer, told the AP.

Police scrambled in front of the west side of the building near the Senate Hart Building. CNN reporter Athena Jones reported hearing several shots.

The U.S. Capitol Police have issued a warning for all staff to shelter in place, and to close and lock all doors. The warning also says to stay away from windows and external doors.

Both the Senate and House of Representatives has gone into recess as a result. All Senate office buildings – Hart, Russell and Kirksen – and all House office buildings, Cannon, Ford, Rayburn, and Longworth – are also locked down.

Pennsylvania Avenue has been closed, and areas around the White House have been cleared out.
