This comes after his surprising defeat in this week’s election despite outspending his opponent during campaigning.

Rep. Eric Cantor (Va.), who lost a Republican primary race last night to his tea party opponent Dave Brat, is stepping down as House Majority Leader, the Washington Post and Politico report.

On Wednesday, Cantor will formally announce his plans to step down at the end of July, WaPo reports.

With nearly all of the votes counted in Tuesday’s primary, Brat had 56 percent of the vote to Cantor’s 44 percent. The results were historic, as no sitting House majority leader has lost since 1899.
