On one of our new favorite shows, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, the special guest last night was Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio!

During the Keep It 100 segment, Wilmore took questions from Twitter users and one of those users happened to be de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray. She poked a little fun was at marital life and de Blasio expertly made a formerly tasteless joke regarding the Real Housewives of Atlanta and the remixed hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.

Wilmore and de Blasio talked about legalizing marijuana, affordable housing, the Eric Garner case and repairing his camaraderie with the NYPD (after they repeatedly turned their backs on him). For Keep It 100, the best tweeted question came from McCray, the First Lady of New York. And her question was adorable:

How cute?! de Blasio laughed and promptly answered his tough cookie better half, “This is truly keeping it 100. I was ordered to pick up the dry cleaning. I am too scared to defy that order.”

Wilmore then took the opportune chance of asking the first Democratic Mayor in two decades, “So what you’re saying, Mr. Mayor, is that Black Wives Matter?”

He answered, “Clever! Very good. Yes they do. Si se puede.”

That was great! We’re not sure if de Blasio got the Black Wives Matter references, but we’ll clue you in. Back in January, a poster appeared online and in some parts of Atlanta it featured a Bravo promo ad with the Real Housewives of Atlanta and added slogan of “Black Wives Matter,” an obvious lesson in bad taste. It was supposed to be a clever spin on #BlackLivesMatter, the hashtag that’s been created since the recent surge of police killings on young Black men and women. Everyone and their mommas blamed resident RHOA bad girl, Kenya Moore. But it wasn’t her, surprisingly! Even she’s not that distasteful, but Bravo denied any ‘involvement’ with the quip and an apology was soon issued from the creators.

Wilmore was able to turn a tacky joke into a tolerable one and we laughed right along with de Blasio. How was he able to make that too soon joke work? Sound off in the comments below.
