With the Michael Brelo trial coming to an end any day now, members of Cleveland’s faith based community prepare to keep the peace in the streets no matter the verdict.

On Monday, 20 people stood inside the Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church asking for orderly demonstrations. One hour following the verdict in the Brelo trial, churches throughout the city will open their doors for prayer and conversation.

“Wars are breaking out,” said Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Jimmy Gates. “Fires are breaking out. There is a lot of looting. There is continued violence. We do not want that in Cleveland. Our city has come back to what we knew it as the best location in the nation, and we want to continue that progress that we are making on.”

This group says that progress comes from a history of unity.

“We are engaged,” said Khalid Samad with the Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance. “And we are part of the demonstrations. We are a part of the rallies. And we want to hear the voices.”
