(RNN) – Debris from a Boeing 777 discovered on Reunion Island comes from the Malaysia Airlines flight that disappeared without a trace in 2014, Malaysia’s top government official said Wednesday.
Prime Minister Najib Razak said his government would do everything it could to determine what happened to the airplane.
Flight MH370, which disappeared March 8, 2014, shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, bound for Beijing, China, was missing longer than any commercial jetliner in modern aviation history. It gave no signals of distress before losing communication. All 239 people on board, including three Americans, are presumed dead.
Xavier Tytleman, a French pilot and aviation expert, broke the story of the debris in a July 28 post of his blog showing photos a man had sent him of the debris. The Frenchman’s post ignited an investigation that a day later confirmed the 7-foot flaperon, a control surface on the back of a wing, did come from a Boeing 777, the same model of plane that disappeared.
That conclusion indicated a high probability the wreckage came from MH370, which was the only 777 in the world unaccounted for.
