A New York City judge has ordered a yellow taxi driver to pay $25,000 in fines and compensation for bypassing a Black executive and her family to pick up White passengers, according to DNAInfo New York.
Judge Raymond Kramer ruled last week that Baqir Raza must pay $10,000 in compensation toCynthia Jordan and a $15,000 civil fine after lying to the executive about being off-duty when they tried to hail him outside of Macy’s in Midtown on Oct. 19, 2013, writes the news outlet.
The 57-year-old Queens resident works as a vice-president at a stock transfer firm, the report says.
On Oct. 19, 2013, she and her two daughters had taken the LIRR from their Queens home to Manhattan to attend her brother-in-law’s birthday party…
Jordan’s daughter, Chiley Holder, spotted Raza pull his taxi over and allow a passenger to exit.
His on-duty roof light was on, but Raza locked the door when Holder tried to open it, according to the decision. He told her that he was taking a break and switched on his off-duty light.
The decision says that “Raza then drove 25 feet and picked up two White women,” the report says.
Good for Jordan for addressing an indignity that many Blacks suffer daily. If we all followed her example, do you think it would change the behavior of drivers toward Black passengers? Share your stories in comments about hailing a cab while Black.
