CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

A baby shot and killed Thursday has been identified. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner confirms the 5-month-old is Aavielle Wakefield. She was shot and killed on Cleveland’s east side, near East 143rd Street and Kinsman Thursday.

Cleveland police say the 5-month-old, the little girl’s mother and two other people were in a car when someone fired shots. The baby was the only person who was hit. She was struck in the chest.

According to a 911 caller, “somebody was shooting at our car when we came through the street and they shot the baby, the baby dead.”

Police sources tell us the shots may have come from an apartment building near that intersection.

A SWAT team, a helicopter with thermal cameras, and K-9 units were brought in to look for the suspect.

Officers evacuated residents around one building where they believe the gunman may have been hiding.

SWAT members went from house to house while detectives searched the property with flashlights.

Police Chief Calvin Williams told the media, “enough is enough.”

“There are people that know what happened. Things are all over Facebook, all over social media. Probably even before this happened,” Williams said.
