CLEVELAND– The Westboro Baptist Church filed permits to protest during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this summer.
The group, known for protesting same-sex marriage and military funerals, is requesting to use the official speakers platform at Public Square on Tuesday, July 19, according to the applications. The Westboro Baptist Church is also seeking to use Perk Plaza, an area designated for public art displays, on Wednesday, July 20.
The permits were filed by Rachel Hockenbarger, attorney for the church and daughter of its founder Fred Phelps. They indicate five people will participate.
