Since the two of them hooked up earlier this year, things have moved at relatively lightening speed for Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna. They got engaged and announced they were expecting a baby within a short span of time. Many were (and still are) skeptical about the relationship and its authenticity, as well as the motives of Chyna herself, given her drama-filled history with the Kardashian clan. Well now, just before the premiere of their E! reality show this September, the couple opens up and grants PEOPLE magazine an exclusive interview.

It was just about three years ago when Rob Kardashian retreated from the spotlight of his uber-famous family amid embarrassment and frustration about his highly noticeable weight gain. Not only did he stop appearing on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, but he also missed major family milestones, such as sister Kim Kardashian West’s elaborate wedding to husband Kanye West in 2014. He became a recluse while living with sister Khloe and the public rarely caught glimpses of him. All of that changed however at the beginning of 2016, he began dating Blac Chyna (who shares a son with Tyga, who dates Rob’s baby sister Kylie) and slowly began to make his foray back into the public eye.

In an exclusive with PEOPLE magazine, Kardashian opens up about his weight gain, his new relationship, becoming a father and being committed to mending his broken relationship with his family.

Interview excerpts via PEOPLE:

[On not attending Kim’s wedding]: “I was doing my suit fittings in Paris right before the wedding and I just wasn’t comfortable,” reveals Kardashian. “I’m 6’1” and at my most I probably weighed 300 lbs. “There were cameras at the airport on our trip there and I was very unhappy with the person I saw in all the pictures,” he admits. “I’m upset I missed my sister’s wedding but it was a personal decision.”

[On skipping family functions and retreating]: “I just wasn’t down to have photographers follow me, so I made sure I was away from all of that,” Kardashian explains. “I’m very good at disappearing. “I wasn’t happy with myself so I didn’t want my family to see me that way,” he says. “[Khloe and I] butt heads about it. She’s all about, ‘your biggest revenge is your body,’ and I’m trying to find happiness in my own way.”

[On wanting to see his family more]: “The way I dealt with my issues maybe wasn’t the best, but nobody can make me happy but me,” he says. “Now I want to see everybody in my family every chance I get. You never know what is going to happen tomorrow, and I don’t want to do that to my mom [Kris Jenner].”There were definitely dark days for me, and I’m still not fully happy looking at myself in the mirror,” he admits. “But I’m working towards that. And I’m happy.”
