CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

A 37-year-old man was charged Friday in the death of State Highway patrol trooper Kenneth Velez. A driver crashed into the veteran trooper Thursday on Interstate 90 near the Cleveland-Lakewood border.

Joshua Gaspar appeared in court Saturday morning on charges in Velez’s death. The judge placed the Columbia Station man on a $500,000 bond.

Gaspar was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. Court records show he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. His attorney during Saturday’s hearing said they had not received any test results showing Gaspar was under the influence.

Prosecutors said Gaspar failed a field sobriety test at the time of the crash.

Gaspar was arrested at the scene of the crash on Thursday and was cooperating with officials.
