CLEVELAND – Cleveland city councilman Zack Reed announced his plans to run for mayor Wednesday.

Reed held a news conference to make the announcement official at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Reed, the Ward 2 councilman, has served 16 years on city council.

“I am pleased and honored to announce my candidacy for Mayor of the City of Cleveland,” Reed said in a statement issued to the media. “During my 16-years in City Council, I have gained an understanding of the complexities of this city from our downtown neighborhood to the wards and neighborhoods outside of the bright lights of downtown. We cannot have prosperity without safety and currently our city is not a safe city.”
