After a rocky off screen of FOX Empire season 5, last nights season finale because of the prior 3 episodes and Jamal’s wedding ended up being the perfect storm for Jussie Smollett to get ship wrecked and lost at sea like Gilligan.
According to FOX Empire’s Showrunner Brett Mahoney:
“Had the wedding episode hit in a different place, it would have been much, much, much more difficult,”

Season 5 of Empire ended with Kingsley giving himself an abortion, after his mother wished she had one, that gave Andre life although the Cookie crumbled because Lucious new found sensitive ways allowed him to sit down to Andre’s supposed to be last supper, and Kingsley isn’t the only thing that is going 6 feet under.

So what about Jussie Smollett AKA Jamal Lyon and Season 6 ?? Mr. Mahoney confirmed that Mal ain’t coming back from his honeymoon.
As for moving forward, Mahoney confirmed that while he hasn’t gathered with the show writers yet to break the story (i.e. the writers room process of breaking down or outlining the story before the script is written), there will be an “adjustment” required for the new season.
“Season 6 will have to be somewhat of a reset, and we’re going to find some exciting, bombastic way in,” Mahoney noted. “And we may discover that it takes more than just blood to be a Lyon, and we might see some other characters step up and step into the fold.” – Read More
