British singer Estelle sat down with S2S Publisher Jamie Foster Brown recently to talk about her career, future family and her upbringing.
Although she was once the quiet girl in the room, Estelle definitely has a voice and draws attention now.
What was it like when she first started getting feedback from fans about her talent? She shares. When you first came out, what were your expectations and what did you learn, being in the music business? Tell me some of the things that you were happy about and sad about or surprised about.

Jamie:
Estelle: I was happy that 90 percent of the people that saw me just got me and liked me and told me as much, as far as music and whatnot. I had a good coach in John Legend. I wasn’t shy of work, so I was going everywhere. And being real, I think that was—people are always scared of what they don’t know. When you walk up to them and they know you, now there’s nothing to be scared of. So a lot of them might have embraced me on that level. What I didn’t like was the general perception that well, you shouldn’t be different. Why are you trying to be different? It was like, ‘I’m not.’ It disturbed me. It wasn’t like saying I was being quirky or anything, it was more like, ‘How dare you be cultured and assured, ‘cause none of us are.’ And, ‘How dare you know who you are?’ That kind of energy. And I was like, ‘Oh, well, I don’t know how to answer that. All I know how to do is be me.’
