CLEVELAND – A robbery turned into a rescue after the suspect jumped from a bridge trying to run from an off duty police officer.

The incident started at East 89th Street and Buckeye Road in Cleveland when a man tried to rob a woman who he was riding with in a car.

Stacy Lewis said that the suspect demanded money and her cell phone while sitting at a stop light. When she refused, he started to fight with her. At the same time, an off duty Cleveland police officer arrived at the intersection and tried to break up the fight, Lewis said.

The suspect allegedly  took off on foot headed north on East 89th Street, and the officer chased the suspect to a bridge on 89th and Woodland.

The suspect jumped over the bridge’s railing and fell 50 feet below onto a set of railroad tracks, police said.

Emergency crews were called to the scene, and once Cleveland fire and RTA police were able to get down beneath the bridge, they found the suspect alive next to the tracks.

Lewis said that show thought the suspect was a close friend and that she was taking him home after going out for the night. The suspect robbed her of car keys and cell phone. Neither have been recovered by police.

According to Cleveland EMS the suspect was transported in stable condition to MetroHealth Medical Center.
