CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

Cuyahoga County Prosecutors say a convicted sex offender has been indicted on a 1998 rape case, the second time he’s been indicted for a cold rape case.

Jimmie Jackson is accused of breaking into a woman’s home on East 124th Street in Cleveland in the middle of the night. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason made the announcement Thursday.

On August 24, 1998, Jackson, now 46, broke into the victim’s apartment located at 697 East 124th Street in Cleveland. The victim was sleeping at the time and was startled by a loud noise. Jackson had been going through the victim’s purse which was located on a nearby dresser. Jackson put his hand over the victim’s mouth and threatened to kill her. Jackson then sexually assaulted the victim. DNA resulted in a CODIS hit to Jackson in June 2011.

The Cold Case Unit’s investigation, with assistance from BCI & I has resulted in the four count indictment against Jackson including charges of aggravated burglary, kidnapping, rape, and aggravated robbery. The charges carry notice of prior conviction, repeat violent offender and sexual motivation specifications. Jackson was convicted of aggravated burglary charges in 1987. He was found guilty by a jury in 1989 of robbery. He pleaded guilty in 2008 to rape and pleaded guilty again in a separate case in 2009 to charges of aggravated burglary and rape. Jackson is currently serving time at Belmont Correctional Institution for these crimes.

Jackson’s criminal record goes back decades.

With a grant from the National Institute of Justice and the Office of Ohio Attorney General, Prosecutor Mason created the Cold Case Unit in 2006. The Cold Case Unit works with Cleveland Police Detectives from the Homicide and Sex Crime Units as well as BCI & I and the Cuyahoga County Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (CCRFSL).  This DNA grant provides for the investigation into and the collection of evidence that contains biological material that may solve cases through the use of DNA. The Unit has solved 17 murders and rapes since 2006.
