CLEVELAND—

She’s known as the Queen of Soul to millions of fans across the world for her singing, but now, Aretha Franklin can add something else to her resume: Doctor.

Well, not a real doctor, but Ms. Franklin will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from Case Western Reserve University on November 5 at the American Music Masters tribute concert.

The university said the 18-time Grammy winner was being recognized for her achievements in American culture and work during the civil rights movement.

The concert precedes a weeklong celebration, Lady Soul: the Life and Music of Aretha Franklin, a reflection on Franklin’s legacy and contributions to popular music.

Franklin, the first female Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, will be honored at Playhouse Square State Theatre (dressed in academic garb) around 7:30 p.m. Monday.
