To honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Oprah Winfrey is bringing the cast of “Roots” to her Montecito, Californiahome as she marks the 35th anniversary of the 1977 Emmy-winning ABC miniseries that exposed the horrors of slavery and triumphs of its survivors, with a primetime TV special set to air MONDAY night on OWN.
The Legendary Cast of ‘Roots’ 35 Years Later are reuniting to share personal accounts of working on the series and its lasting impact.
Cicely Tyson, LeVar Burton, Leslie Uggams, John Amos, Louis Gossett Jr. and Ben Vereen are among the Roots cast memers confirmed to appear on the special, which was produced by Harpo Studios.
“Over the years the cast has dwindled,” shares Cicely Tyson, who appears in the OWN special (premiering on MLK day Monday, Jan. 16) alongside costars Leslie Uggams, LeVar Burton, John Amos, Louis Gossett Jr. and Ben Vereen. “But I was grateful that many of us are still here to account for this spectacular event. What Oprah is doing should be commended because Roots meant so much to people all over the world.”
