CLEVELAND – The West Side Market will be celebrating its 100th birthday.
The city of Cleveland, Ohio City Inc. and Charter One announced the official calendar for the centennial celebration on Monday.
The year-long series of events will include a kickoff, public street festival and gala featuring local and national chefs, as well as regular programming that celebrates the neighborhood and ethnic traditions of Cleveland’s public market.
“For a century, the West Side Market has been an anchor for the community that has drawn people to the city for just as long,” said Mayor Frank Jackson.
The West Side Market opened to shoppers on Nov. 2, 1912. It’s Cleveland’s oldest continuously operated, municipally-owned market. It has stood as an anchor to the historic Ohio City neighborhood over the decades.
Built to replace the Pearl Street Market, located on the opposite corner since 1840, it was one of three public markets that included the Broadway Market and the Central Market. All three served Cleveland’s growing immigrant population in the early 20th Century. Only the West Side Market remains.
