A collision between a Jeep and a go-cart in Pearland, Texas has sparked a race debate that’s initiated a flood of phone calls and e-mails from across the country.
But while people on the outside are debating race, those close to what happened are shutting down that argument. Still, they have a problem with what’s occurred and a bigger problem that the woman hasn’t been arrested.
His son was rushed to the hospital with head and neck injuries. “I don’t think, I know for a fact that she intentionally did it,” said Moor. “She left from the northbound lane, crossed over into the southbound lane, jumped the curb and hit my son head on in his go-cart.”
The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office did not arrest the woman at the scene or charge her with a crime. Instead, investigators chose to take it to a grand jury. Moor is frustrated and wants charges filed against the woman, who lives around the corner from him. “I want justice to happen. I want a felony charge to be taken against this woman,” Moor said.
Monday, Capt. Chris Kincheloe of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office said he’s fielded over 70 calls regarding this case. He said misinformation went viral, and race was at the center of the outrage. “I talked to people from Maine, from California, one from Canada,” said Capt. Kincheloe.
Kincheloe doesn’t believe race had anything to do with the collision, and he said it has nothing to do with why the woman wasn’t arrested at the scene of the crash. “It was my decision to slow everything down, to do a thorough investigation and have the charge probably vetted to a grand jury,” said Capt. Kincheloe.
The case will go to a grand jury on Wednesday. The woman, who has not been named because she was not arrested, could face a charge as serious as aggravated assault. She responded to calls from KHOU with a written statement:
“As a mother of two children, I was concerned for the safety of these kids because they were driving their vehicle erratically and at high speeds through the neighborhood and also came dangerously close to a lake. When I saw them driving erratically for the second or third time that evening, I pulled my vehicle over and stopped” she wrote.
“They were still driving fast and because they had driven onto a grass area, when they hit the brakes to stop, they skidded and ran into my vehicle after I had stopped. This is about the safety of children and nothing more,” she concluded.
Meanwhile, Moor’s son was still recovering from his injuries Tuesday.
