According to Wyclef Jean, it was a question of paternity that ended his affair with Lauryn Hill.

In excerpts from the book Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story released tomorrow, the Haitian born leader behind the iconic hip-hop super group released private details about his relationship with mistress and former fellow group member Lauryn Hill.

Wyclef alleges that when Lauryn was pregnant with her first child, Zion, he was led to believe that the baby was his and that he did not find out the truth about the child’s paternity until after the boy was born.

“In that moment something died between us,” wrote Wyclef. “I was married and Lauryn and I were having an affair, but she led me to believe that the baby was mine, and I couldn’t forgive that.”

Wyclef previously hinted that the romance was the catalyst for the group’s split in 1997, and in his new memoirs he blames Lauryn and her alleged lies for ruining their music magic.

“She could not longer be my muse. Our love spell was broken,” said Wyclef.

While Wyclef was specific about the reasons his relationship with Lauryn ended, her ex Rohan Marley, was less so in a recent interview with The Voice.

“As a man, there are certain things I don’t accept, and it just so happened that I didn’t accept certain things [in the relationship],” Rohan said. “It doesn’t mean she’s a bad person or I’m a bad person. It just didn’t work out.”
