SANFORD, FL (CNN) – Jury selection began Monday in the trial of George Zimmerman.

Protesters with signs lined up outside the courtroom before proceedings got under way. The Judge again denied Zimmerman’s lawyers’ request for more time to prepare for the trial.

As many as 500 potential jurors are expected to be questioned. About 100 are expected to be called each day until a panel is selected.

The judge has not decided if the jury will be sequestered, but their identities will be protected.

Zimmerman, 29, is charged with second-degree murder in the February 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The former neighborhood watch volunteer claimed the shooting was in self defense.

Prosecutors alleged Zimmerman targeted the unarmed teen.
