CLEVELAND – Charmaine Parks groomed her healthy bushes on her corner home off of Bartlett Avenue with an electric trimmer. But, the buzz in the neighborhood over Ward 2 Councilman Zack Reed’s sentencing following his third OVI arrest was almost as loud as Park’s electric shears.
“If it was the average Joe Schmo, we’d all be under the jail, so he needs to do his time and go seek help,” Parks said.
John Wilson wheeled his bike along Barlett Avenue where Ward 1 and Ward 2 meet each other in an invisible line on a city map.
Wilson thinks Reed has done good work for the neighborhood, also hoping he seeks help after his time served of 10 days in jail starting Sept. 25. That sentence to serve was reduced from 180 days during the sentencing phase Thursday morning in Cleveland Municipal Court.
“You do the crime you got to do the time, you know, he has done a lot of good things for this community, you know I really don’t have a lot problem with it,” said Wilson.
For Reed, his day in court was a sobering day just weeks before he is up for re-election.
“As the judge said, I’m grateful and thankful to the Lord that I didn’t kill anybody,” Reed said.
