A feature-length documentary on the life and career of the late Whitney Houston is on the way from Showtime. The film kicked off production this week, Deadline reports. Nick Broomfield, most known for the extremely controversial Kurt & Courtney, is set to direct and narrate the untitled film. The project, which will also see a UK release via BBC, has been in development for over a year.
“Nick is a bold storyteller with an acclaimed track record of provocative documentary filmmaking,” Vinnie Malhotra, Senior Vice President of the network’s documentary division, tells Deadline. “Showtime Documentary Films is thrilled to partner with him on this project, as he delves deep into the life of Whitney Houston to tell the real story behind the rise and fall of one of America’s most iconic singers.” According to Showtime’s current plans for the production, extensive interviews with “key people” are taking place in Los Angeles for Broomfield’s film. Many of Houston’s most memorable musical moments and behind-the-scenes footage will also be included, though specifics remain uncertain.
Houston, who tragically passed away at the age of 48 in 2012, contributed decades of inimitable classics during her unmatched musical career. In addition to smashing Billboard chart records, Houston garnered multiple Grammys, Emmys, and an astounding 22 American Music Awards.
