Weather Channel meteorologist Jen Delgado just blamed Haiti’s deforestation on starving children who eat trees.

Delgado was reporting on Hurricane Matthew on Monday when she suddenly decided to educate the public about Haitian agricultural landscape. Displaying a NASA image of Haiti and the Dominican Republic on the Weather Channel, she pointed out the clear lack of greenery in Haiti:

“This whole area has been essentially deforested. They take all the trees down. They burn the trees. Even the kids there, they’re so hungry, they actually eat the trees.”

As you can imagine, Twitter went in.

The drubbing was so bad that the Weather Channel CEO was forced to issue an apology.

“We are terribly sorry for an on air error and are taking measures to correct it,” David Clark wrote. “It should not have happened period.”
