I don’t think this is what Black History Month is supposed to be like.
While on a field trip for Black History month fifth graders from Ebenezer Avenue Elementary in Rock Hill, South Carolina, 5th grade students were taken to the Carroll School, were the child picked cotton and sang a slave song. The Carroll School, which was constructed in 1929 by African Americans, is a center that helps teach African American history during the Great Depression.
The teacher recorded a video of the children picking cotton while singing slave songs. Parents were outraged when they learned from their children about what went on. The field trip was supposed to be about the Great Depression and not Slavery. The schools defense was, picking cotton was on the permission slip and that the song the children were singing while picking cotton, was a song that was sung by slaves during Great Depression time period and it was originally written by an African-American instructor.
