Meek Mill has been battling his 2008 drug and gun conviction charge for 11 years. Now he’ll finally get to do it in front of a different judge.
The Philadelphia rapper was granted an appellate court hearing in his home city with the Superior Court, set to take place on July 16. Meek’s lawyers now have the chance to ask the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to overturn the rapper’s 2008 conviction and not Judge Genece Brinkley, the woman who previously oversaw his case.
“We’re looking forward to the oral argument before the Superior Court of Pennsylvania and to, hopefully, having Meek’s conviction vacated. In light of the District Attorney’s recent filing, where he supports the granting of a new trial to Meek and the recusal of Judge Brinkley, we hope to have this injustice rectified once and for all,” Meek’s lawyer Jordan Siev told Complex.
In 2018, documents revealed that the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office put together a “secret list” of suspect cops and that Reginald Graham, Meek’s arresting officer from 2007 was on that list. Graham was subsequently tied into numerous corruption scandals and for falsely testifying in court, including on Meek’s case. Graham said under oath that Meek was selling drugs and pointing a gun at officers during the time of his arrest, which Meek denied. Another officer, Jerold Gibson, submitted a sworn affidavit that supported Meek’s story.
The case has been in limbo for years due to Judge Brinkley’s alleged discrimination against the rapper and repeated denials of a new trial or overturning Meek’s conviction due to Graham being found to be corrupt.
