CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 51-year-old Beachwood man was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for giving his wife AIDS.
Fernando Castro pleaded guilty to felonious assault last month in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. His sentence sparked applause from family members of his wife, but the 42-year-old woman showed no satisfaction. Instead, she covered her eyes and blotted tears with a tissue.
The woman, whom The Plain Dealer is not identifying, said in an interview after the hearing that she was satisfied by the sentence, but noted that it will not cure her. She declined to speak at her husband’s sentencing.
If Castro had told her at any time during the first 14 years of their relationship, she could have gotten treatment before the infection he transmitted to her turned into AIDS.
