CLEVELAND, OH –

Giving to the Cleveland schools has been a passion for former Cleveland Mayor and United States Senator George Voinovich and his wife Janet for 32 years. In October of 1979, the Voinovichs’ nine year old daughter, Molly, was hit and killed by a van on her way to O.H. Perry school in Cleveland.  During a celebration at the school, in Molly’s honor, they once again presented their gift to the schools.

“When we lost Molly we thought the best way to keep her memory alive was to share our love for her through the lives of the kids in the major work program,” Voinovich said before he presented his annual gift.

Voinovich also took time to urge Clevelanders to vote for the school levy. The senator became emotional as he explained how important the levy is to the city, “I call this Molly’s levy, this is a chance to make a difference. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.”

The senator, through campaign funds has supported levy efforts.  He said he believes in schools CEO Eric Gordon and insists the city’s future is at stake, “I really believe in my heart, and I’ve lived in the city all my life,  that unless we improve the school system the city is lost.”
