CLEVELAND – Election Day is Tuesday and the polls will be open in Cuyahoga County from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

There are several key issues on the ballot, including the following:

·         Issue 1: Health and Human Services levy increase that, if passed, will continue to provide services to people during a crisis or trauma

·         Issue 79: A renewal levy for the Cleveland Public Library

·         Issue 80: A renewal levy to fund the Cleveland Metroparks, including the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

·         Issue 82: A renewal levy to fund the Port Authority

Also in Cleveland, the race for mayor is a battle between two democrats. Incumbent Mayor Frank G. Jackson and businessman Ken Lanci, who has argued the mayor doesn’t deserve a third term in office.

“I went with him [Lanci] because I want to just make new changes,” said an unidentified voter in Cleveland on Monday.

“I voted for Mayor Frank Jackson,” said another voter.

Voting started last month at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections where the director said they’re ready for Tuesday. “We have 1,047 precincts in Cuyahoga County with 410 voting locations that people will show-up and vote,” said Pat McDonald.

It is an off-year election and county officials don’t expect the turnout to be high, according to McDonald. “We’ve had over 100,000 people request vote by mail ballots, but only about 75% of those have been returned to date.”

There are approximately 890,000 registered voters in Cuyahoga County.

A population shift in Cleveland means the ward count is going from 19 to 17 with each side of town essentially losing a ward. On the west side, Councilman Jay Westbrook is retiring and there’s no internal battle. On the east side, Councilmen Jeff Johnson and Eugene Miller are vying for the new Ward 10.

he new boundaries take effect in January when the new council and possibly a new mayor will be sworn into office.

“Get out and vote. Your vote counts. Every vote counts and everybody has to do their part to make it a better place,” said Stella Reid, a voter in Cleveland.

If voting absentee, a ballot must be dropped-off at the board of elections before 7:30 on Tuesday night.
