In light of the Baltimore riots over Freddie Grey, the city of Cleveland is being proactive in their approach to similar situations involving police and the community. Radio One Cleveland along with Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson have been promoting peace and justice throughout the Michael Brelo trial.

The police shooting that rocket East Cleveland

Today marks the closing argument in the Michael Brelo trial after four weeks witness testimonies. Brelo is the police officer who was indicted for his role in the deaths of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams on Nov. 29, 2012 during the police chase that rocked Cleveland’s Eastside and spawned a Department of Justice investigation in the CPD.

Brelo is charged with two counts of voluntary manslaughter. He has pled not guilty even though he fired 49 shots into the car, with the last 15 unloaded while standing on the hood of Russell’s car, according to records filed by prosecutors. The records indicate that Brelo unleashed them four seconds after other officers had stopped firing.

Five supervisors – sergeants Randolph Dailey, Patricia Coleman, Jason Edens, Michael Donegan and Lt. Paul Wilson – were charged with dereliction of duty for their role in a chase that involved 62 police cars and more than 100 officers. The supervisors have pleaded not guilty.

In addition to the deaths of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams, Cleveland has also seen a number of deaths by cop in recent: unarmed Tanisha Anderson, 12 year old Tamir Rice and a shocking DOJ investigation listing numerous victims of unreasonable use of force by the CPD.
