A man trying to remove a gun shell casing from his shirt killed his son after accidentally shooting him at a Florida gun range police reported.

According to the New York Daily News, the shooting happened Sunday at Sarasota’s High Noon Gun Range at 3:15 p.m. when William Brumby tried to remove a spent shell casing from his shirt.

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying the casing ended up in the back of William Brumby’s shirt after he shot a round which bounced off of the wall reported the New York Daily News. Per the Sheriff’s Office statement William Brumby was in the range’s last shooting lane and had a wall on his right-hand side.

With his right hand still holding a handgun William Brumby reportedly used the same hand to remove the shell.

“While doing so, he inadvertently pointed the firearm directly behind him and accidentally fired,” the sheriff’s office said.

Brumby’s 14-year-old son Stephen J. Brumby, who authorities say was standing right behind him, was struck. He was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he later died reported the New York Daily News.
