AURORA – Wildwater Kingdom water park in Aurora is closing after this season.

The park’s final day of operation is Monday September 5.

To have some understanding of where the area might go, you have to look back.

Aurora’s Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin said the Geauga Lake property is about 540 acres of land.

Seventeen acres comprise Wildwater Kingdom.

Wildwater Kingdom used to be the SeaWorld portion of Geaga Lake.

For all practical purposes, Geauga Lake is dead, and it has been for almost a decade after parent company Cedar Fair announced it would close Geauga Lake in 2007.

It’s the fear of the void that has most concerned.

But Womer said robust discussions are already underway, saying there’s been talk of mixed use development.

Wormer things a mix of commercial retail and residential space would make the most sense.

A boardwalk is also part of the discussion.

Aurora’s mayor said the city is working pretty quickly on a master plan with the owner, cedar fair, but ultimately the sale of the property is up to the owners.

The mayor said every indication she’s been given has been to sell the land to a developer that wants to head towards mixed use.

Aurora rezoned its side of the property from industrial to mixed use two years ago.
